Photo Finds

Mystery Object from Gateshead's Collection of Historic Photographs
Mystery Object from Gateshead's Collection of Historic Photographs

The iSeeGateshead Project has been working to digitise historic photographs of Gateshead since October 2005. The archive will be available online from Winter this year.

The archive includes thousands of fascinating photographs but every now and then we come across a photograph which leaves us, well, totally stumped!

This photograph was taken at Birtley Iron Company, between about 1910-1920. But what is it? Suggestions have ranged from a counterweight for a crane to a bathysphere! What is most puzzling are the rectangular indentations on the lower half of the object. Any ideas? Contact us with your suggestions using the link to the right.
