FIND OUT MORE

Interested in local history or researching your family tree? We can help. We have books, newspapers, maps, photographs, census records and electoral registers, online resources, family history surgeries and much, much more...

Our main collections are located within Information Services at Gateshead Central Library, while St Mary’s Heritage Centre contains material relating to Gateshead's oldest church. St Mary's was the original Parish Church for the town and the venue of all Church of England burials before 1811 and all baptisms and marriages before 1825.

Find out more about your Gateshead ancestors, the history of the Gateshead area and how to begin your research. If you're visiting to do research it's often best to phone ahead, that way we can reserve a PC, microfilm or microfiche reader for you and ensure that we have the materials you need. Please telephone us on 0191 433 8430 or email: libraries@gateshead.gov.uk
