welcome to local history

Interested in the history of Gateshead or researching your family tree? At Gateshead Central Library we have books, newspapers, maps and photographs that can help you in your studies.

We also hold electoral registers, census and church records and local trade directories. You can get free access to online resources like Ancestry or attend workshops to teach you how to use them.  And regular family history surgeries are held at our site in St. Mary's Church on the quays, which provides a range of events and activities to enhance your research.
